Harbour Renewal: Understanding the Myers Cocktail and Why Its Ingredients Matter

Jul 09, 2025

The Myers Cocktail has been around since the 1960s, when Baltimore physician Dr. John Myers began using intravenous nutrient combinations to support patients with a range of chronic conditions. His work was later documented and expanded by Dr. Alan Gaby, who spent 16 years treating an estimated 800 to 1,000 patients and recording clinical outcomes across conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and migraines (Gaby, 2002).

It is one of the most recognized formulations in integrative medicine and has been used clinically for over 50 years.

What Is Actually in It

The classic Myers Cocktail combines Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, and B Vitamins delivered intravenously in a saline solution. At Hyndford Hydration, our version is called Harbour Renewal and follows this classic formulation. Each ingredient has a documented physiological role and is delivered at concentrations that oral supplementation cannot reliably achieve due to limitations in digestive absorption.

What the Evidence Actually Says

Large-scale randomized controlled trials on the Myers Cocktail as a complete formula are limited. The most notable controlled study, a pilot trial examining Myers Cocktail for fibromyalgia, found that both the treatment and placebo groups experienced meaningful symptomatic relief, but no statistically significant difference between groups was established, partly due to the small sample size (Ali et al., 2009). That reflects where the research stands on the complete combination, specifically.

What is better supported is the evidence behind each individual component.

Magnesium has one of the strongest evidence bases of any nutrient in wellness IV therapy. A 2025 comprehensive review confirmed accumulated evidence from multiple randomized controlled trials supporting magnesium supplementation for migraine frequency and severity, muscle function, and sleep quality (Dominguez et al., 2025).

Vitamin C delivered intravenously achieves plasma concentrations that oral supplementation cannot reach due to gut absorption limits that cap how much the body can absorb at once from dietary sources. Its role in immune function, collagen synthesis, and antioxidant activity is well established.

B vitamins are essential cofactors across dozens of metabolic pathways, including energy production, nerve function, and cellular repair. Depletion is common in people with demanding schedules, high stress loads, and inconsistent dietary intake.

Calcium plays a role in muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and cellular signalling.

The case for the Myers Cocktail is not that the complete formula has been proven in large-scale trials. The case is that each component has a legitimate evidence base, IV delivery provides absorption reliability that oral supplementation cannot match for many people, and the combination has been used clinically for decades with a well-established safety profile when administered appropriately.

Dr. Gaby's clinical documentation of outcomes across hundreds of patients, though not a controlled trial, constitutes a substantial body of observational evidence worth taking seriously (Gaby, 2002).

Who Tends to Choose Harbour Renewal

Harbour Renewal is our most requested general wellness infusion. Clients commonly choose it during periods of fatigue, stress, recovery from illness, or when dietary intake has been inconsistent. It is a broad-spectrum nutritional support option for people who want more than hydration alone in a single session.

It is not a treatment for specific medical conditions, and we won't claim otherwise. The individual components are well supported, the delivery method is clinically rational, and the safety profile at wellness doses is well established.

IV therapy is supportive in nature. We do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and we will not claim to do so.
