The Benefits of IV Magnesium

Magnesium is one of the most researched nutrients in clinical medicine and one of the most commonly depleted in people living busy, high-demand lives. It is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, playing documented roles in muscle function, nerve transmission, energy metabolism, and sleep regulation (Dominguez et al., 2025). It is also one of the nutrients with the strongest evidence base for IV supplementation, which is why it features prominently in our Pacific Reset infusion and in our Harbour Renewal Myers blend.

Here is what the research actually says across the three areas clients most commonly ask about.

Magnesium and Migraines

This is where the evidence is genuinely compelling. Magnesium deficiency has been consistently observed in people with migraines, and accumulating evidence from case reports, observational studies, and randomized, placebo-controlled trials has shown the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation in reducing migraine frequency and severity, both acutely and as a preventive measure (Dominguez et al., 2025).

A prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that IV magnesium was as effective as standard first-line medications, including metoclopramide and prochlorperazine, for acute migraine treatment, suggesting it is a clinically useful option in migraine management (Shaikh et al., 2021). A systematic review in PubMed examining IV magnesium sulfate for acute headache treatment found potential benefits in pain control, aura duration, and reduced need for rescue analgesia (Ginder et al., 2000, updated in subsequent reviews).

For clients who experience migraines and have not found adequate relief through other means, the evidence supporting magnesium as a supportive option is among the strongest bodies of literature in the wellness IV space. We will not tell you it treats migraines, because IV therapy is supportive in nature, and we do not make treatment claims. We will say that the research here is worth taking seriously.

Magnesium and Sleep

The relationship between magnesium and sleep quality is well established in observational research and increasingly supported by clinical trials. Magnesium plays a role in regulating the nervous system and supporting the neurotransmitter pathways involved in sleep onset and maintenance.

A 2024 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover pilot trial found significant improvements in sleep quality, mood, and activity outcomes, including sleep duration, deep sleep, sleep efficiency, and heart rate variability, in the magnesium supplementation group compared with placebo (Breus et al., 2024). A separate 2024 randomized controlled trial using magnesium L-threonate found significant improvements in deep and REM sleep stages as well as daytime functioning (Hausenblas et al., 2024).

It is worth noting that most sleep research has focused on oral magnesium supplementation rather than IV supplementation specifically. The relevance to IV delivery is that for clients with poor gut absorption, inconsistent dietary intake, or acute depletion, IV magnesium provides a more reliable route to replenishment than oral supplementation on any given day. If your magnesium levels are genuinely low, getting them up efficiently matters regardless of how you do it.

Magnesium and Muscle Recovery

Magnesium is essential for muscle contraction and relaxation, electrolyte balance, and energy production during physical exertion. Depletion through sweat, physical exertion, and inadequate dietary intake is common among people who train regularly, perform physically demanding work, or are under prolonged stress.

A 2025 systematic review examining magnesium's roles in muscle function and sleep found consistent evidence supporting magnesium supplementation for muscle recovery, with magnesium depletion directly linked to cramping, impaired recovery, and reduced physical performance (Cepeda et al., 2025).

A Note on IV Versus Oral Magnesium

Oral magnesium is effective and appropriate for many people. The case for IV delivery specifically comes down to two things: absorption reliability and immediacy. Oral magnesium absorption varies considerably depending on the form of supplement, gut health, and what else is in your digestive system at the time. For clients who are acutely depleted, experiencing active symptoms, or who have absorption concerns, IV delivery bypasses all of that and puts magnesium directly into circulation at a predictable concentration.
