<p>If you have spent any time researching IV therapy, you have almost certainly come across a physician or medical commentator dismissing it. The arguments tend to follow a predictable pattern. There is no evidence that it works. You are just paying to make expensive urine. It is a placebo. Save your money and eat a salad.</p><p>Some of that skepticism is legitimate. Some of it reflects the same blind spots that have historically slowed the acceptance of acupuncture, naturopathy, chiropractic care, and other approaches that are now widely used and increasingly covered by insurance. This is partially true and frequently misapplied.</p><p>Yes, your body excretes water-soluble vitamins it does not need. It does this regardless of whether they arrived orally or intravenously. The relevant question is not whether excess is excreted but whether adequate amounts reached circulation in the first place.</p><p>Oral vitamin absorption is variable. It depends on gut health, the form of the supplement, what else is in your digestive system, age-related changes in absorption, enzyme function, medication interactions, and individual metabolic differences (Gröber et al., 2020, as cited in PMC, 2025). For a person with optimal digestion, no absorption concerns, and consistent dietary intake, oral supplementation may work well. For a significant portion of people, it does not, and the excess excretion argument tells you nothing useful about whether those people are actually absorbing what they take.</p><p>IV delivery bypasses all of those variables. What goes in reaches circulation at a predictable concentration. Studies have demonstrated that IV Vitamin C achieves plasma concentrations 50 to 100 times higher than what is achievable through oral ingestion (Inside Health Clinic, 2026). For clients with pernicious anemia who cannot absorb B12 through the gut, intramuscular or IV delivery is the medically accepted standard of treatment. Nobody dismisses that application as making expensive urine.</p><p>The argument that excess excretion proves IV therapy is pointless applies equally to oral supplements. The evidence base for wellness IV therapy is less robust than that for pharmaceutical interventions, and we have said so directly in our other posts&nbsp;discussing individual ingredients. We are not going to pretend the research is stronger than it is.</p><p>What is worth examining is why that evidence gap exists.</p><p>Clinical research at scale is expensive. The funding structures that support large randomized controlled trials are built primarily around pharmaceutical development, where patent protection creates financial returns that justify the investment. Nutrients cannot be patented. Magnesium, Vitamin C, B12, and glutathione are off-patent compounds with no commercial exclusivity. The financial incentive to run expensive phase III trials on IV nutrient combinations is limited, which means the evidence base develops more slowly than it would for a drug with commercial returns attached.</p><p>This is not evidence that the therapies do not work. It is evidence that our research infrastructure prioritizes certain kinds of knowledge over others. The absence of a large randomized trial is not evidence of no effect, and treating it as such would apply a standard that many accepted medical practices would not meet.</p><figure id="figure-hvifwolr7dmjg52y56"><img id="hvifwolr7dmjg52y56" src="https://media.gettyimages.com/id/81711407/photo/doctor-in-hospital-corridor.jpg?b=1&amp;s=2048x2048&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=Al0INBmFySxxYzsGaPAC4ljEApbIDl_2S8T845drxdQ=" alt="healthcare professional" class="object-cover bg-gray-100" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://media.gettyimages.com/id/81711407/photo/doctor-in-hospital-corridor.jpg?b=1&amp;s=2048x2048&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=Al0INBmFySxxYzsGaPAC4ljEApbIDl_2S8T845drxdQ=" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>On Placebo</h3><p>The placebo argument deserves particular attention because it is more interesting than the dismissal usually acknowledges.</p><p>A 2009 fibromyalgia study found that participants receiving Myers Cocktail experienced significant improvements in pain, depression, and quality of life after eight weeks. The placebo group also reported significant improvements, leading the authors to note a strong placebo effect and describe the actual effectiveness as uncertain (Ali et al., 2009, as cited in Mayo Clinic Press, 2024).</p><p>This finding gets cited frequently as evidence that IV therapy does not work. It is worth sitting with what it actually shows.</p><p>Both groups got meaningfully better. The intervention group and the placebo group both reported real improvements in pain and quality of life over eight weeks. The conclusion drawn was that IV therapy is therefore ineffective because the placebo group also improved. A different reading of the same data is that whatever happened in that room, for those people, over those eight weeks, produced real and meaningful improvements in how they felt.</p><p>Placebo response is a real physiological phenomenon. It involves measurable changes in brain chemistry, immune function, and pain perception. It is not imaginary. Dismissing an outcome because a placebo contributed to it assumes that a&nbsp;placebo is not a legitimate mechanism of benefit, which the evidence does not support. A therapy that produces meaningful improvements partly through placebo mechanisms is still producing meaningful improvements.</p><p>There is also a broader question worth asking. If a person feels meaningfully better after a session, sleeps more soundly, has more energy for the following three days, and reports improved wellbeing, at what point does the mechanism matter more than the outcome? We are not arguing that a placebo explains everything or that the mechanism is irrelevant. It carries real clinical risks when administered without proper screening, by unqualified practitioners, or outside appropriate clinical oversight. The wellness IV industry has providers who overstate benefits, understate risks, and prioritize revenue over clinical rigour. That criticism is valid, and it is one reason clinical standards, regulated nursing oversight, and NP medical directives matter.</p><p>The skeptics are also correct that IV therapy is not a substitute for addressing the root causes of poor health. Chronic dehydration caused by consistently poor fluid intake is better addressed by drinking more water than by regular IV sessions. Nutrient deficiencies caused by consistently poor dietary intake are better addressed by improving diet than by bypassing it indefinitely. IV therapy is a supportive tool, not a lifestyle replacement.</p><p>Where mainstream medicine tends to go wrong is in treating the absence of large-scale trial evidence as equivalent to evidence of absence, and in dismissing the consistent subjective reports of people who have experienced meaningful benefit as simply a placebo, as though that settles the question rather than opening it.</p><h3>Where Hyndford Hydration Stands</h3><p>We think IV and IM therapy is a genuinely useful supportive tool for the right clients in the right circumstances. <h3>Why It Happens and How to Reduce It</h3><p>Bruising after IV therapy can be surprising, especially when the mark looks larger or darker than expected. While it can be uncomfortable to look at, most bruises are harmless and fade within a few days. Understanding why bruises happen, why some people are more prone to them, and what helps prevent and reduce them can make the process feel less stressful.</p><h3>What Causes Bruising After an IV or Injection</h3><p>A bruise forms when a small amount of blood leaks from a vein or capillary under the skin. This can happen if the vein wall is fragile or if a small amount of blood leaks into the surrounding tissue after the IV is removed.</p><p>Worth knowing: the metal needle is never left in your vein during an IV infusion. Once the nurse accesses the vein, the needle is removed and replaced by a soft, flexible cannula, a thin plastic tube, that remains in place for the duration of the treatment. Bruising occurs at the insertion site itself, not because a needle is left inside.</p><p>Common reasons for bruising include vein fragility, where some veins are naturally thinner or more delicate and more prone to tearing or collapsing. Movement during or shortly after the infusion can let a small amount of blood escape from the vein. Medications and supplements, including blood thinners, anti-inflammatories, steroids, or fish oil, can increase the tendency to bruise. It is not a sign that anything went wrong.</p><h3>Health Conditions That Affect Vein Accessibility</h3><p>Certain health conditions can make veins more fragile or harder to access, increasing the likelihood of bruising. Sickle cell disease can leave veins scarred or narrowed from repeated access. Diabetes affects circulation and collagen integrity. Autoimmune or connective tissue disorders thin the skin and increase vessel fragility. Chronic dehydration makes veins less full and harder to locate. Even in healthy clients, hydration status, stress, and genetics all influence how veins behave on any given day.</p><h3>When It Is the Nurse and When It Is Not</h3><p>Bruising is often a mix of factors: anatomy, vein health, and technique.</p><p>Even the most experienced nurse can cause a bruise if a vein is thin, rolls easily, or has an unseen weak spot in the wall. The same nurse can insert an IV perfectly in one client and cause another to bruise despite using the same technique. Our nurses use gentle insertion methods, select the most suitable veins, and apply firm post-removal pressure to reduce the likelihood of bruising. What we cannot control is the vein itself.</p><h3>Types of Bruising After IV Therapy</h3><p>A minor surface bruise is a small blue or purple spot near the insertion site where a tiny amount of blood has leaked under the skin. Very common and nothing to worry about.</p><p>A blown vein, or hematoma, is a larger, darker bruise with some swelling, occurring when the vein wall gives way and a small pool of blood forms in the surrounding&nbsp;tissue.</p><p>A diffuse bruise follows the line of the vein and may be tender, caused by a small amount of blood or IV fluid tracking under the skin.</p><p>A post-infusion leak produces a puffy area that may later turn yellow or green as it heals, due to IV fluid leaking into the surrounding tissue before the vein is fully sealed.</p><p>All of these resolve naturally over time.</p><figure id="figure-nyfn3zfpdamprgkq5w"><img id="nyfn3zfpdamprgkq5w" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1618382521247-fef16f6c6b18?crop=entropy&cs=tinysrgb&fit=max&fm=jpg&ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxN3x8cHVycGxlJTIwYnJ1aXNlJTIwb24lMjBoYW5kfGVufDB8fHx8MTc4MDA5MTYwMnww&ixlib=rb-4.1.0&q=80&w=1080" alt="brown textile on white textile" title="brown textile on white textile" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionX="undefined" data-positionY="undefined" data-fullWidth="false"/></figure><h3>The Stages of a Bruise</h3><p>Fresh, within 0 to 2 days: the bruise appears red or deep purple and may be tender or slightly warm.</p><p>Healing in three to five days: turns blue or dark purple as the body begins breaking down blood cells.</p><p>Recovery at five to ten days: becomes green or yellow as pigments continue to change.</p><p>Fading at ten to fourteen days: light brown or pale yellow before the pigments clear entirely.</p><h3>How to Reduce Bruising</h3><p>Immediately after your infusion, keep your arm straight and still, and apply firm pressure for at least 1 to 2 minutes after the IV is removed, longer if you are on blood thinners.</p><p>In the hours that follow, apply a cool compress for 10 to 15 minutes a few times during the first few hours. After twenty-four to forty-eight hours, switch to gentle warmth to help circulation. Stay well hydrated and consider arnica or Vitamin K cream if desired.</p><p>Avoid rubbing or massaging the site right after the infusion, and avoid strenuous activity or lifting with that arm for the rest of the day.</p><h3>If You Are Nervous About Another IV After Bruising</h3><p>A bruise does not mean your other veins are damaged or that IVs will always cause the same result. A new IV can safely be started above, below, or on the opposite arm from the bruised area. The bruise itself is only under the skin and does not affect how other veins function.</p><p>Nurses are generally taught to begin distally, closer to the hand or wrist, and move upward only if needed. In practice, every person's veins are different. If a lower vein is too small, fragile, or has recently bruised, your nurse may choose a site higher on the arm where the vein is stronger or straighter. A skilled nurse assesses each person individually to choose the safest and most comfortable site.</p><h3>When to Contact Your Nurse or Physician</h3><p>Most bruises heal without any problems. Contact your nurse or healthcare provider if the area becomes hot, red, or increasingly painful, if swelling does not improve after a few days, or if you experience numbness, tingling, or firmness near the site. These could indicate mild vein irritation or inflammation that should be assessed.</p><p>Bruising can happen to anyone, even with gentle technique and proper care. Veins are living tissue, and their condition changes with hydration, age, and medications.
